Aculight was founded in 1993 and currently specializes in tailoring advanced solid state, fiber and semiconductor lasers for specialized customer requirements. Novel laser technologies pioneered by Aculight have led to our continued rapid growth. Aculight currently has 20 issued or pending patents covering unique laser technologies or laser applications. Since our first year of operation in 1993, the company has grown to an annual revenue level of about $7 million supported by a 40 person staff. Aculight was honored in 1995 as one of the city's Emerging Business of the Year, and in 1997 -2000 as one of the 100 Fastest Growing Private Businesses in Washington State.
The Air Force Research Laboratory recognized that semiconductor lasers offer significant benefits if they could be used to perform the same function as gas and solid-state lasers which are being used in some electro-optical systems. A semiconductor laser should be more efficient, compact, reliable and less expensive than these other types of lasers. But, to date, the application of semiconductor lasers in such applications was limited by their relatively poor optical output characteristics. A novel laser technology, reduced to practice in the SBIR Phase I and II projects, enables high power semiconductor lasers to be used in applications previously reserved for these other types of lasers.
Aculight's novel laser technologies also provided some distinctive features in lasers that could be used in commercial applications leading Aculight to spin out a separate new venture, called nLight Photonics. The new company formed in 2000 was funded by a leading venture capital firm, Mohr Davidow Ventures of Menlo Park, CA. About $52 million in total VC investment has been attracted to the company spun out of Aculight.
