MIOX Corporation, one of the fastest growing high-technology companies in the Rio Grande corridor, has made safe water supplies a corporate objective. MIOX has 18 employees and 45 distributors in 12 countries and on five continents. In conjunction with its parent company, Los Alamos Technical Associates, Inc. (LATA), MIOX has created and commercialized an extraordinarily simple process which more effectively and safely disinfects water. MIOX was incorporated in 1994 and has installed hundreds of water purifying units worldwide. MIOX seeks to be the premier international supplier of on-site mixed oxidant generators for water disinfection in the 21st century.
The U.S. Army sought simpler water purifying methods which would be highly mobile and utilize relatively simple equipment and inputs to generate water in remote locations. Using the mixed oxidant process developed by LATA, MIOX developed a new process, using a membraneless electrolytic cell that generates a mixture of oxidants in solution from salt water made from common water softener salt. The company's generators have been effectively used by the Army, the United Nations' Pan American Health Organization, and many others to purify water in difficult and remote environments.
Because of the quality and reliability of MIOX's water purifying technology developed under SBIR, the company has sold hundreds of units. MIOX grew to $1.5 million in sales by the end of its second year in business (1995), and is expected to see double this level of revenue in 1998. Recognized as the second major competitor for disinfection equipment by the largest and fastest growing water treatment company in the world, MIOX is certain to see continued rapid growth.
