SBIR sponsored innovation proved the feasibility of adapting commercial satellite communications (SATCOM) for connectivity to aircraft worldwide and produced a successful communication system. An SBIR small business developed two distinct software products that provided automatic Aero-C (e.g., L-Band) SATCOM protocol routines, user-friendly message authoring interfaces for aircrews, Global Positioning System (GPS) position reports, intelligent message routing from wherever on the planet the aircraft was flying, and dynamic updating of address tables to keep messages flowing to the aircraft with the correct tail number.
The Air Force was provided a cost-effective system that operates on a commercial notebook computer. The system features highly reliable, worldwide coverage, user-friendly e-mail interface, system expansion capabilities and authentication and encryption capabilities. AMC considers this technology a "critical" C2 system resource for its air movement missions. The system is usually the only means of contacting an aircraft and has saved numerous flying hours by allowing controllers to redirect or recall missions enroute. Air Force Air Mobility Command (AMC) has installed the L-Band SATCOM hardware in all of its C-5 Galaxy, C-141 Starlifter and KC-10 Extender aircraft. Other versions of the system are being used as "carry on" equipment for the C-17, C-130 and KC-135 aircraft. The system has also been extended to include Tanker Airlift Control Element (TALCE) operations and is now used to collect cargo and passenger information and read bar codes.
